Our Research Focus
We offer an avenue for research, both in origination and as a medium for
sharing studies of the maritime field. Our focus is on the general history
of maritime seafaring, but encompasses current issues that are informed
by a thorough, thoughtful, and critical understanding of history, with
an emphasis on its human factors and impacts.
We do not aim to be encyclopedic in our scope, but we do draw on other
resources and related specialties to make this site central to a broad
exploration of our topical areas. In this way we can make the most effective
use of the dynamic nature of the World Wide Web.
Our research topics include ships, shipping lines, ports, and--most important--the
men and women of the world's merchant navies.
We have also begun a project to record information about non-mariners whose
lives have been profoundly affected by ships and the maritime industry,
such as emigrants, children of sailors, and others.
Here you will find access to our repository of historical data. We have
begun compiling a master database with cross-references for shipping lines,
ships, people, and geographic locations and regions. This database is the
key tool, the framework, for our research work. It provides a location
for recording facts that may be incorporated into larger research projects,
provides linkages for those conducting research, and is a means of providing
links to existing and in-progress research projects.
We are developing a Web work space page that will provide access to the
database, along with a number of tools to allow you to conduct research
from one page while accessing resources from throughout the world.
