Research

We offer an avenue for research, both in origination and as a medium for sharing studies of the field. Our focus is on the history of maritime seafaring, but encompasses current issues that are informed by a thorough, thoughtful, and critical understanding of history.

Our research topics include ships, shipping lines, ports, and--most important--the men and women of the world's merchant navies.

We have also begun a project to record information about non-mariners whose lives have been profoundly affected by ships and the maritime industry, such as emigrants, children of sailors, and others.

Seminars and Special Events

Join us for seminars covering maritime history and current issues that affect the industry and society.

We also offer themed dinners that immerse participants in particular segments of maritime history. Our members get exclusive opportunities to visit ships in port. The Maritime Research Center will also offer maritime-related travel opportunities at special prices.

Education

The Maritime Research Center offers a variety of educational programs to meet the needs of its members and society. Ranging from seminars to the structured curricula of the Maritime Research Academy, you will find educational opportunities to help increase your knowledge.

And now you can become more effective in your maritime research through our Certified Maritime Research Specialist curriculum. Complete the full schedule of courses to earn accreditation or choose the classes that will give you the enhanced skills you want.

Tours

We are pleased to offer a Tour of Historic Los Angeles Harbor and San Pedro. This tour, which can be adapted for the needs and specific interests of any group, provides an over of the history of one of the world's major harbors and the community that surrounds it and has enabled its growth over more than a century.

The basic tour is two-and-a-half hours and travels from the Vincent Thomas Bridge on the northern side of the Harbor to Ft. MacArthur on the south.

The tour can accommodate from 15 to 50 guests.
